titleOfInvention Process for removing sulfur from a residual acrylate stream
abstract <B> PROCESS FOR SULFUR REMOVAL FROM A RESIDUAL ACRYLATE CHAIN <D> Broadly speaking, the present invention is directed to a process for removing sulfur from a residual acrylate stream. Specifically, a process for recovering and reusing an acid catalyst used primarily in the reaction of acrylic esters is disclosed. During the reaction of acrylic acid and an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, the acrylate and water products are removed from the rest of the reaction by-products (heavy terminations and oligomers). These heavy by-product termination components, which include the acid catalyst employed in the reaction process, are directed to an evaporator. The residual current is then contacted with water in an extractor. Upon contact with water, a phase separation occurs between the mixture of acid / water catalyst and other organic matter. The organic matter is discarded, while the acid / water mixture is recycled for the reaction process. The present invention provides for the use of an evaporator and an extractor to assist in the separation of the acid catalyst from the residual stream of reaction by-products. This removal of the acid results in the emission of less organic sulfur components from the reaction process and, consequently, it is a less harmful process to the environment.
