titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for adjusting corneal curvature using a corneal ring with biocompatibly removable material |
abstract | Invention Patent: <B> "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CORRECT CURVE ADJUSTMENT USING A CORNEAN RING WITH BIOCOMPATIBLE REMOVABLE MATERIAL" <D>. An adjustable intra-stromal device, adapted for implantation in the cornea and formed of a flexible hollow shell (30a) that is implantable within the cornea in a wrapping relationship in the central optical zone of the cornea. The implant is filled in a predetermined amount with a selected amount of solid biocompatible material in various ways, such as a solid ring (38) or wires composed of flexible polymeric materials of varying shapes and length, or alternatively, a fluid such as saline or gel in the compartments (117) of the housing (107) which can be selectively perforated. The biocompatible filling material is strategically located inside the flexible casing in order to change its thickness or diameter dimensions and, thus, adjust the corneal curvature to correct a refractive error. Other adjustments of the implant can be made in a post-operative moment after implantation through the selective removal of the biocompatible filling material, or the addition of a new material to the device. |
