Method for microbial decontamination of blood platelets. |
abstract |
Invention Patent: <B> "METHOD FOR MICROBIAL DECONTAMINATION OF BLOOD PLATELETS" <D>. A method for inactivating microbiological contaminants in a human blood platelet preparation is described. The method comprises, first, the supply of blood platelets, particularly platelets of human blood, which are suspected to be contaminated with microorganisms. The platelets are then placed in contact with a fixative (preferably by combining them with a 1.8% solution of paraformaldehyde) for a period of time sufficient to fix the platelets (preferably during 45 minutes to 1 hour). After fixation, platelets are preferably washed and dried in order to produce fixed dried blood. The step of contacting platelets with a fixative is carried out for a period of time sufficient to kill some or all contaminating microorganisms. |
