The present invention provides a quaternary ammonium etidronate (qae) compound comprising a quaternary ammonium cation and an etidronate anion, having the formula i. A method for preparing such compounds is described by reacting a quaternary ammonium salt with an etidronic acid or salt thereof. Varying ratios of such reagent can also be used to form different compounds qae. the quaternary ammonium etidronate compound is useful in water treatment, cosmetic, hygiene, personal care, paint, coating, wood treatment, agrochemical, antimicrobial, disinfectant or biocidal compositions; the compound provides high biocidal and anticorrosive properties; and low fouling properties. Also described is a water treatment composition having a compound qae of formula I and a biocidal water treatment agent useful in cooling towers and other recirculating water or recreational water systems. |
