titleOfInvention METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ESTIMATING A BLOOD BILIRUBIN LEVEL AND METHOD FOR DETERMINING A RATE OF CHANGE IN BLOOD BILIRUBIN LEVEL CAUSING YELLOWING SKIN IN A PATIENT
abstract The invention relates to diagnosis generally and more specifically to a system and method for determining the presence of jaundice in newborn babies, also known as neonatal jaundice. A primary objective of the present invention is to provide a simple system and method for determining the presence of jaundice. In particular, since many deaths from jaundice occur in low-income countries, there is a great unmet need for simple and reliable available technologies capable of identifying at-risk newborns. The goal is achieved by receiving a representation of the skin from an RGB sensor, and then using an optical diffusion model of the skin or Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the bilirubin concentration. A metamodel from the optical diffusion model or from Monte Carlo simulations can also be used. Color calibration is also performed via thin plate polynomial curve interpolation, for example.
