abstract An object of the invention is a process for preparing water soluble or water swellable polymers containing (a) 5 to 98 mol%, preferably 20 to 80 mol% of one or more recurrent structural units of formula (1) in which r1, r2, r3 represent hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, y represents a chemical bond, o, ch2, c (ch3) h, c (o) nr2, a represents a chemical bond, o, arylene, phenylene, c1-c12- straight or branched alkylene, a linear monohydroxyalkylene group of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, or a straight or branched dihydroxyalkylene group of 3 to 6 carbon atoms d represents s (o), poh, por3 or po- q +, q + represents h +, li +, na +, k +, ½ ca ++, ½ mg ++, ½ zn ++, 1/3 al +++, ¼ zr ++++ - or represent mixtures of these ions, and (b) 2 to 95 mol%, preferably 20 to 80 mol% of one or more recurrent neutral structural units independent of each other, characterized in that the monomers from which they are joined (a) and (b) are derived, are polymerized into a polar solvent or mixture of polar solvents by radical precipitation, provided that when the polar solvent or mixture of solvents contains 2-methyl-2-propanol, a ketone or Both, a second organic polar solvent, must be present.
