abstract in one aspect, there is provided a non-naturally occurring or transgenic mutant plant cell comprising: (i) a polynucleotide comprising, consisting of or consisting essentially of a sequence encoding a member of the cic family of chloride channels and having at least 60% sequential identity with sequence id: 1 or sequence id: 2 or sequence id: 3 or sequence id: 4 or sequence id: 10 or sequence id: 11; (ii) a polynucleotide encoded polypeptide set forth in (i); (iii) a polypeptide comprising, consisting of or consisting essentially of a sequence encoding a member of the clc family of chloride channels, having at least 60% sequence identity with sequence id: 5 or sequence id: 6 or seq id no: 7 or seq id no: 12 or seq id no: 13 or seq id no: 14; or (iv) a construct, vector or expression vector comprising the isolated polynucleotide set forth in (i); and wherein the expression or activity of the polynucleotide or polypeptide is modulated compared to a control plant and wherein the nitrate levels in the non-naturally occurring or transgenic mutant plant-containing mutant plant occur. unnatural or transgenic plants are modulated compared to a control plant containing the plant control cell.
