titleOfInvention |
in vitro methods to quantify the level of chronic stress in a fish, use of fish scales and use of a spine, fin ray or otolith |
abstract |
the present invention relates to the determination of the level of stress suffered by the fish over time that can be used in the analysis of the fish's welfare state. more particularly, the present invention relates to the use of scales as well as other calcified tissue such as otoliths, spines and soft fin ray taken from a fish sample in order to quantify glucocorticoid levels in said scales / matrices. the levels of so-called glucocorticoids - such as cortisol or corticosterone - are formed over time in scales and reflect the stress and long-term conditions that the fish suffered during their lives and that affected the level of stress. therefore, the present invention describes in vitro methods to quantify the level of chronic stress in fish using scales as a logistically feasible and non-invasive matrix for accurate and accurate quantification of said stress hormones. |
