METHOD TO SELECTIVELY CONTROL THE DEGREE OF POROSITY IN A POLYMERIC MATERIAL, AND, POLYMERIC MATERIAL |
abstract |
TECHNIQUE FOR SELECTIVELY CONTROLLING THE POROSITY OF A POLYMERIC MATERIAL A method is provided to selectively control the degree of porosity in a polymeric material. The material is formed by a thermoplastic composition containing a microinclusion additive and a nanoinclusion additive that are dispersed within a continuous phase of a matrix polymer in the form of discrete domains. At least a part of the polymeric material is deformed so that a porous network is formed therein. In addition, at least a portion of the deformed polymeric material is heat treated so that it exhibits a smaller pore volume than the material before heat treatment. In this way, the polymeric material can exhibit a high degree of initial flexibility, but this flexibility can be selectively reduced when desired. |
