titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR DETERMINING A TYPE OF INFECTION IN AN INDIVIDUAL |
abstract | SIGNATURES AND DETERMINANTS FOR DIAGNOSIS OF INFECTIONS AND RESPECTIVE METHODS OF USE. Antibiotics (Abx) are the most misused drugs in the world; misuse of antibiotics occurs when the drug is given in the case of a non-bacterial infection (such as a viral infection) for which it is ineffective; overall, an estimated 40-70% of Abx procedures worldwide are prescribed incorrectly; the financial and health consequences of overprescribing Abx include the direct cost of the drugs as well as the indirect costs of their side effects, which are estimated to be >US$15 billion per year; in addition, over-prescription directly causes the emergence of strains of bacteria resistant to Abx, which are recognized as one of the main threats to public health today; this generates an immediate need for reliable diagnoses that assist physicians in correctly prescribing Abx, especially in the care phase (POC), where most Abx are prescribed; accordingly, some aspects of the present application provide methods using biomarkers to rapidly detect the source of infection and administer appropriate treatment. |
