abstract | methods and systems for covalent bonding or curing of composite parts using a rigid / malleable smp device. the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for making a composite part, such as a fuselage or internal reinforcer, a shape memory polymer (smp) apparatus that can be used in both the rigid and the lay-up tool in a bladder. the smp device can be heated until it is malleable, molded, and then cooled in a desired rigid tool configuration. for example, cavities can be formed in the smp apparatus to place components in it to be covalently connected or bored with the composite part. the composite material can then be applied to the smp apparatus and then placed on a rigid external tool and heated to curing temperatures at which the smp apparatus is malleable. a pressure differential can be induced that drives the smp device to compress the composite material against the rigid external tool. when the composite material is cured, the smp apparatus can be propelled away from the cured composite material and removed from within the composite part. |
