abstract production of non-yeast sterols by yeast this invention relates to the production of 7-dehydrocholesterol, 25-didroxy-7-dehydrocholesterol and 25-hydroxy-ergosterol in yeasts, for example, saccharomyces cerevisiae. it is also related to several enzymes that catalyze the reduction of the double bond at position 24 of lanosterol, dimethyl zimosterol, methylzimosterol, zimosterol, colesta-7,24-dienol or colesta-5,7,24-trienol; or hydroxylation at position 25 of ergosterol, 7-dehydrocholesterol, cholesta-8 and cholesta-7 enol. it is also related to several nucleic acids encoding cholesterol c25-hydroxylases and sterol (delta) 24-reductases and their use to produce and hydroxylate 7-dehydrocholesterol or ergosterol. it is also related to the yeast strains thus produced, and to the production methods of these sterols which comprise the steps of culturing a cell from a transformed yeast and the collection of the resulting sterol (or sterols).
