abstract |
the present invention relates to a reinforcement means for molded and extruded articles such as tires has a metallic structure with a layer of silica gel attached thereto. silica gel binds the reinforcement medium to the rubber compound during molding / vulcanization of the rubber compound without the need for a slow curing stage. silica gel can be applied to the metal structure by a sol-gel process with the gel being formed by drying the sun at a temperature of up to 150Âșc. the reinforcement means is preferably a cable formed of steel wires coated with silica gel. to further improve the bond of silica gel to the rubber compound, an organosilane bonding agent can be included in the rubber compound or the reinforcement medium provided with a second layer containing an organosilane as a bonding agent. reinforcement means are particularly useful for increasing strength and providing geometric stability to tires. |
