abstract Genetically engineered yeast strains are described to produce increased amounts of non-hydroxylated collagen or hydroxylated collagen. a chimeric collagen DNA sequence comprising 10 to 40 percent or 60 to 90 percent optimized DNA based on the total length of the chimeric collagen DNA. Also described is a multifunctional vector that includes the DNA needed to produce collagen, promoters and hydroxylation enzymes. Methods are also provided for the production of non-hydroxylated or hydroxylated collagen.
