abstract material identification methodology through methods of comparing spectra of a sample against a reference library of material spectra. The present invention addresses a method of comparing spectra from the spectra of a sample and at least one spectra of a reference library (pref1, pref2, pref3) the method comprising the steps of: obtaining at least one relevant spectral peak ( p1, p2, p3 and p4) from the sample spectrum, and compare each of the relevant spectral peaks (p1, p2, p3 and p4) obtained with the reference library spectra (pref1, pref2, pref3). A method for comparing spectra from the second sample spectrum derivative and the second reference library spectrum derivative is also discussed. A method for comparing spectra with the prior identification of the major component of a sample is described, the method comprising the step of triangularly correlating the spectra of the sample, the reference and the major component. Finally, devices are described to ensure the uniformity of readings between different devices and compatibility with the spectra libraries, by the uniform fixation and positioning of the samples and standardization with the aid of calibrators.
