titleOfInvention | POROUS BASED BIORREATOR FOR USE IN CELL AND IMMEDIATE ENZYME REACTIONS |
abstract | Porous Basket Bioreactor for Use in Immobilized Cell or Enzyme Reactions The present invention is a vertically elongated bioreactor containing a porous basket for use in immobilized enzyme reactions. The apparatus consists of a vertically elongated glass reaction vessel having one (1) liquid reagent inlet and one (1) product outlet; containing a basket completely submerged in the reaction medium. Immobilized biocatalyst particles comprising enzymes are placed into the porous container such that the liquid reagent contacts the biocatalyst in both radial and axial directions. the bioreactor feed point may be located at any point along the dimensions of the bioreactor, but preferably at an upper or lower end of the vessel. Such an invention has the advantage of allowing greater contact between the reactants and the biocatalyst, which in turn increases the reaction rate and the efficiency of the biocatalytic reaction. Another advantage is that the biocatalyst can be separated from the reaction mixture simply by draining the circulating liquid. |
