The present invention relates to dispersed gamma ray monitoring and is used to identify substances disposed between coaxial tubes 412 disposed in an underground bore 402. Gamma rays are strategically directed from the interior of an innermost tube 412 to the interior of the annular space 422 and some of the gamma rays scatter from the substance between the tube 412s and are detected with detectors set at a designated axial distance from the gamma ray source 428. Gamma rays also disperse from the fluid in the Inside tube 412, a ratio of the detected gamma rays scattering from the fluid in tube 412 and from the substance can be used to determine the substance.
