"Oxidized Prosthetic Materials". A method for the chemical fixation of tissues by exposing the tissue to a chemical fixative under oxidizing conditions. Chemical fixing agents usable in this method include aldehyde (e.g., formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, dialdehyde starch), isocyanates (e.g. hexamethylene diisocyanate) and certain polyepoxy compounds (e.g. DENACOL). Oxidizing conditions may be provided by heating a chemical fixative solution containing the crosslinking agent in the presence of ambient air or oxygen. Alternatively, oxidizing conditions may be provided by one or more chemical oxidizers (eg hydrogen peroxide or other peroxides, sodium periodate or other periodates, diisocyanates, halogens, n-bromosucinimide or other halogenated compounds, permanganates, ozone, chromic acid , sulfuryl chloride, sulfoxides, selenoxides, etc.) to the chemical fixing solution. Alternatively, oxidizing conditions may be provided by irradiation (e.g., alpha, beta, ultraviolet, electron beam, gamma rays) of the solution in the presence of ambient air or oxygen. |
