The invention relates to BCAT inhibitors and their use for the treatment or prevention of neuronal loss associated with stroke, ischemia, central nervous system trauma, hypoglycemia and surgery, as well as the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease and Down's syndrome for the treatment or prevention of the adverse consequences of excitatory amino acid overstimulation, for the treatment of anxiety, psychosis, convulsions, antibiotic-induced hair loss aminoglycosides, migraine, chronic pain, neuropathic pain, Parkinson's disease, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cytomegalovirus retinitis, urinary incontinence, tolerance or opioid withdrawal, and inducing anesthesia as well as for increased cognition.
