titleOfInvention Apparatus for the detection and measurement of molten metal particles
abstract "APPLIANCE FOR THE DETECTION AND MEASUREMENT OF PARTICULATES IN MELTED METAL". A probe for insertion into the molten metal to detect and measure particulates suspended in it, includes an inner tube of an electrically insulated material that forms a metal receiving chamber, the tube having a hole to allow the molten metal to flow into the inside the chamber. A first electrode extends into the chamber to find metal inside the chamber and a second electrode surrounds at least a portion of the inner tube to find molten metal outside the chamber. The electrodes can be connected to a measuring device to establish a current path through the electrodes and that passes through the orifice to measure changes in the electrical potential produced by the passage of particulate entrained in the molten metal that passes through the orifice. An outer sheath of heat-resistant material surrounds a portion of the second electrode and a gas passage extends outside the inner tube to connect to a vacuum source to create a pressure differential within the chamber to facilitate the flow of molten metal through the hole. A liquidus phase depression material is in the chamber to form an alloy with the molten metal that penetrates the chamber to lower the temperature of the liquidus phase of the molten metal, and allow a longer period of time to detect and measure particles in the molten metal. .
