abstract | The invention relates to the suppression of mucus suppresence in the lungs by administering an antagonist against the EGF-R receptor. It may be in the form of a small organic molecule, an antibody or antibody portion that binds to the EGF receptor and blocks it. Preferably, the antagonist against EGF-R is injected in an amount sufficient to suppress the formation of goblet cells in the lungs in the airways. This inhibits the degranulation of the gallbladder cells, which causes the mucus to form in the airways. The invention also includes studies to evaluate available agents that inhibit the formation and development of goblet cells. |
