abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of (-) - galanthamine, wherein the diphenol derivatives are oxidized with phenyljodoside (III) bis (trifluoroacetate) in a polar solvent at a temperature of 0 to -450C for 10 to 60 minutes. The resulting naphthalene derivative is protected with ethylene glycol and the resulting ketal intermediate is transformed into (R) -ravvedine in high yield by reduction with LiAlH4. Complete conversion of racemic narwein into (-) - narvedine is performed by using (-) - narwein crystals. The resulting (-) - narwedine is reduced stereospecifically to (-) - galanthamine using L-selectivity and subsequent hydrobromic acid treatment produces the hydrobromide salt of (-) - galantamine.
