abstract The esters of 2-cyano-3,3-diarylacrylic acid have the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, a C 1 -C 12 alkyl group, a C 1 -C 12 alkoxy group or a di- (C 1 -C 4 -alkyl) amino group and R 3 is a C 4- C18 alkyl group which may be interrupted by oxygen atoms in the ether function. By the method, benzophenoneimine of the formula is reacted with a cyanoacetic acid ester of the formula at a temperature of from 20 to 600 ° C and continuously removing from the reaction mixture the ammonia released by the reaction by means of a gas stream or by reducing the pressure to 900-100 mbar.
