abstract | 5-Nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone (II) is prepd. by (a) directly nitrating 1,4-naphthoquinone (I) with HNO3 in the presence of an amount of H2SO4 which is such that dehydration value of H2SO4 >4 (>6), pref. at -20 to +80 (0-60) degrees C, and (b) precipitating prod. by introducing reaction mixt. obtd. into an aq. medium, pref. at 0-100 (30-70) degrees C. (II) is a starting material in prepn. of dyes, pigments and agricultural chemicals. 1-nitroanthraquinone can be prepd. by addn. of butadiene to (II) and dehydrogenation. |
