abstract | The ore contains at least one principal sulphide (I) and one auxiliary sulphide (II) more volatile than (I) or transformable into a sulphide more volatile than (I). The ore is heated (a) in an atmos. non-oxidising in the gas phase, to a temp. between the volatilisation points of (I) and (II), so (II) is volatilised together with the labile S, without volatilising or oxidn. of (I); and (b) heating in an oxidising atmos. to below the oxidn. point of (I) for oxidising the volatilised sulphide (II) and the labile S, without oxidising (I). The process is pref. applied to iron pyrite contg. arsenic sulphides by heating in stage (a) at 400-1000 C, and in (b) to max. 425 degrees C. Method has lower capital-and operating-costs, and lower fuel consumption than known processes. |
