abstract Reaction of cepham cpds. of formula (I): (where R is the residue of an imide derived from a dicarboxylic acid; R1 is a carboxy-protecting gp., and X is Cl or Br), with a silver salt of the formula: AgQ (where Q is -ONO2 or -COR2 in which R2 is 1-4C alkyl or 5-6C cycloalkyl) gives a mixture contg. cpds. of formulae (II), (III) and (IV): Cpds. (III; Q = -ONO2), which are new, can be converted into cpds. of formula (II) by heating at 80-175 degrees C. (II)-(III) are useful as inters. for desacetoxy-cephalosporin antibiotics.
