abstract | AUTOMATED HISTOLOGICAL PROCESSING OF BIOLOGICAL SPECIMENS AND ASSOCIATED TECHNOLOGY A method for processing a specimen 3034 carried by a slide 3020 within an automated histological system 2, the method comprising: automatically dispensing a first liquid 3030 so as to form a first puddle on the slide, the first puddle having a shape maintained at least partially by surface tension, the first liquid 3030 being one of a staining reagent and a counterstaining reagent; staining the specimen 3034 with the first liquid 3030 while the specimen 3034 is in contact with the first puddle; removing at least a portion of the first puddle from the specimen 3034 so as to at least partially uncover the specimen 3034 a first time; contacting an intermediate fluid and the specimen 3034 after at least partially uncovering the specimen 3034 the first time; at least partially uncovering the specimen 3034 a second time after contacting the intermediate fluid and the specimen 3034; automatically dispensing a second liquid 3030 so as to form a second puddle on the slide, the second puddle having a shape maintained at least partially by surface tension, the second liquid 3030 being the other of the staining reagent and the counterstaining reagent; and staining the specimen 3034 with the second liquid 3030 while the specimen 3034 is in contact with the second puddle after at least partially uncovering the specimen 3034 the second time. |
