titleOfInvention Hydrophilicity alteration system and method
abstract A method for forming a lens within a polymeric material (PLM) having a UV absorber is disclosed. The method increases the hydrophilicity of only a designated area or an 5 internal region of said PLM. The method comprises generating a pulsed laser radiation output from a laser source having a wavelength selected to interact with said UV absorber within said internal region of said PLM. The method also comprises distributing said pulsed laser radiation output across an 10 input area of a microscope objective and accepting said distributed pulsed radiation into a numerical aperture within said microscope objective to produce a focused laser radiation output. The method further comprises transmitting said focused laser radiation output to said internal region 15 within said PLM to increase the hydrophilicity of said internal region within said PLM. The method further comprises exposing said internal region within said PLM to water and allowing said PLM to absorb water thus reducing the refractive index of said internal region of said PLM to 20 form a lens within said PLM.
