abstract A computer (12) of an image processing apparatus (11) obtains an ultrasonic B mode image of continuous frames to estimate carotid wall at a carotid short axis cross-sectional surface included in the ultrasonic B mode image of a prescribed frame. The computer (12) also uses the ultrasonic B mode image including the estimated carotid wall and the surrounding tissues thereof as a template image and estimates the size of a diameter of the carotid wall such that the error between the deformed template image formed by deforming the template image and the obtained ultrasonic B mode image of each frame becomes minimum for acquiring the time-dependent change of the carotid wall.
