abstract Disclosed are merocyanine derivatives of formula (1), wherein R and R independently from each other are branched C-Calkyl; or branched C-C alkenyl; R and R independently from each other are cyano; COR, COOR; CONRR; SO(C- C)aryl; C-Calk-1-enyl; C-Ccycloalk-1-enyl; C-Calk-1-inyl; C-Cheteroalkyl; C- Cheterocycloalkyl; C-Caryl; or C-Cheteroaryl; wherein at least one of R and R is cyano; R and R independently from each other are hydrogen; C-Calkyl; C-Ccycloalkyl which may be substituted by one or more than one C-Calkyl; and R and R independently from each other are hydrogen; C-Calkyl; C-Calkenyl; C- Calkinyl; C-Ccycloalkyl; C-Ccycloalkenyl; -(CH)COOH; C-Caralkyl; C- Cheteroalkyl; C-Cheteroaralkyl; C-Caryl; C-Cheteroaryl. The compounds are useful as UV absorbers for protecting human hair and skin against the damaging effect of UV radiation.
