abstract The invention is based on the principle that ozonolysis of cyclohexadiene, fatty acid esters which contain the structural element (-CH=CH-CH2-)n, n greater than or equal to 2, or fatty acid ester mixtures with a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, in solutions of hydrogen chloride in lower aliphatic alcohols, and subsequent fractional distillation results in 3,3- dialkoxypropionic esters I, important synthetic building blocks in organic chemistry. It is possible and preferred to use as starting materials mixtures of methyl esters of linseed oil fatty acids, which are easily obtainable by alcoholysis of linseed oil. By-products formed in the ozonolysis are derivatives of caproic, propionic, pelargonic and azelaic acids, which can be separated by distillation and are likewise valuable intermediates in the chemical industry.
