abstract Derivatives of pyridyl- / pyrimidylpyrimidine active as herbicides, processes and intermediates used for the preparation of this type of derivatives. Herbicidal compositions comprising this type of derivatives, as well as the use of this type of compounds and compositions to control the growth of undesirable plants: in particular the use in the control of weeds in crops of useful plants. Claim 1: A compound of formula (1), or a salt or N-oxide thereof, where X¹ is N or CR¹; R¹ is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, cyano, C₁₋₆ alkyl, C₃₋₆ cycloalkyl, C₂₋₆ alkenyl, C₂₋₆ alkynyl, C₁₋₆ alkoxy, -C (O) O (C₁₋ alkyl ₆), -S (O) ₚ (C₁₋₆ alkyl), NR⁶R⁷, C₁₋₆ haloalkoxy and C₁₋₆ haloalkyl; R² is selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, nitro, C₁₋₆ alkyl, C₁₋₆ haloalkyl, C₂₋₆ alkenyl, C₂₋₆ alkynyl, C₃₋₆ cycloalkyl, -C (O) O (C₁₋ alkyl ₆), -S (O) ₚ (C₁₋₆ alkyl), C₁₋₆ alkoxy and C₁₋₆ haloalkoxy; R³ is -C (O) R⁹; R⁴ is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C₁₋₆ alkyl, C₁₋₆ haloalkyl, C₃₋₆ alkenyl, C₃₋₆ alkynyl, (Cʳ alkoxy) (Cₛ alkyl), (Cʳ alkoxy) (Cₛ haloalkyl), ( Cʳ alkoxy (Cₛ thioalkyl), -C (O) R⁹ and - (CRᵃRᵇ) qR⁵; each Rᵃ is independently hydrogen or C₁₋₂ alkyl; each Rᵇ is independently hydrogen or C₁₋₂ alkyl; Rᶜ is hydrogen or C₁₋₄ alkyl; R⁵ is -C (O) O (C₁₋₆ alkyl), -C₁₋₆ cycloalkyl, cyano, -NR⁶R⁷, -C (O) NRᵃRᵇ, -S (O) ₚ (R¹¹) ₙ, -aryl or -heteroaryl, wherein said aryl and heteroaryl are optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R⁸; R⁶ and R⁷ are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C₁₋₆ alkyl; each R⁸ is independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, C₁₋₆ alkyl and C₁₋₆ alkoxy, C₁₋₆ haloalkyl, C₁₋₆ haloalkoxy, cyano, and S (O) ₚ (C₁₋₆ alkyl); Each R⁹ is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C₁₋₆ alkyl, (Cʳ alkoxy) (Cₛ alkyl), C₁₋₆ haloalkyl, (Cʳ alkoxy) (Cₛ haloalkyl), C₂₋₆ alkenyl, C₂₋₆ alkynyl and - (CRᵃRᵇ) qR¹⁰; or R⁴ and R⁹ together with the atoms to which they are attached form a 5-7 membered ring system containing 1 to 3 heteroatoms, where at least one heteroatom is N, and any additional heteroatoms are independently selected from S, O and N; R¹⁰ is -C (O) ORᶜ, -OC (O) Rᶜ, -C₃₋₆ cycloalkyl, or a ring of -aryl, -aryloxy, -heteroaryl, -heteroaryloxy or -heterocyclyl, where said ring is optionally substituted with 1 to 3 independent R⁸; each n is independently 0 or 1; p is 0, 1 or 2; each q is independently 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6; r is 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, s is 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, and the sum of r + s is equal to or less than 6; and R¹¹ is C₁₋₆ alkyl; provided that the compound of formula (1) is not N- [4-chloro-2- (3-pyridyl) -pyrimidin-5-yl] -2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide.
