abstract Claim 1: A method of treating a patient suffering from a disease for which a cysteamine treatment is indicated, comprising administering to the patient an effective amount of a composition comprising a compound of formula (1) or a disulfide thereof, where: R¹ and R² are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl; or R¹ and R², taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a carbocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 members; R³ and R⁴ are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl; or R³ and R⁴, taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a carbocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 members; G is selected from the group consisting of -NR⁵R⁶ and -CR⁷R⁸NR⁵R⁶; R⁵ and R⁶ are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl; or R⁵ and R⁶, taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8-membered heterocyclic ring; R⁷ and R⁸ are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl; or R⁷ and R⁸, taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a carbocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 members; R² and R⁶, taken together with the atoms to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 members; R⁴ and R⁶, taken together with the atoms to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 members; R² and R⁸, taken together with the atoms to which they are attached, form a carbocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 members; or R² and R⁴, taken together with the atoms to which they are attached, form a carbocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 members; with the proviso that when G is -NH₂, at least one of R¹, R², R³, and R⁴ is not H. Claim 40: A compound having the structure of formula (2) or a disulfide thereof, where R¹ is C₁₋₅alkyl; and R³, R⁴, R⁵, R⁷, and R⁸ are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl. Claim 41: A compound having the structure of formula (3) or a disulfide thereof, wherein R¹, R³, R⁴, R⁵, R⁶, and R⁷ are independently selected from the group consisting of H and C₁₋₅alkyl.
