titleOfInvention PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOUNDS AND COMPOSITIONS FOR THE TREATMENT OF VIRAL INFECTIONS
abstract Claim 1: A compound characterized by the formula (1), or a pharmaceutically acceptable stereoisomeric, tautomeric or polymorphic salt thereof, wherein: R is a portion that can be derived by removing a hydrogen from a hydroxy group of a antiviral drug, such as a nucleoside or nucleoside analog; X is O or S; Q is OR⁴, SR⁴ or NR⁵R⁶; each E is, independently, CR⁷R⁸; each n is 1 or 2; R¹ and R² are selected as follows: i) R¹ and R² are each, independently, hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkylheterocyclyl or alkylheteroaryl; ii) R¹ and R², together with the nitrogen atom in which they are substituted, form a 3-7 membered heterocyclic or heteroaryl ring; or iii) R¹ is hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl, and R² is (G) ₘC (O) Q¹, wherein Q¹ is OR⁴, SR⁴ or NR⁵R⁶; each G is, independently, CR⁷R⁸; and each m is 1 or 2; R³ and R⁴ are each, independently, hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl; R⁵ and R⁶ are selected as follows: i) R⁵ and R⁶ are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl; or ii) R⁵ and R⁶, together with the nitrogen atom in which they are substituted, form a 3-7 membered heterocyclic or heteroaryl ring; and R⁷ and R⁸ are selected in the following manner: i) R⁷ and R⁸ are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkylheterocyclyl or alkylheteroaryl, wherein the alkyl is optionally substituted with alkoxy; or ii) R⁷ and R⁸, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a 3-7 membered cycloalkyl ring; and where if R² is (G) ₘC (O) Q¹, G is CR⁷R⁸; m is 1, and one of R⁷ or R⁸ is hydrogen, the other of R⁷ and R⁸ is not methyl.
