titleOfInvention | MITIGANT IRRITATION POLYMERS AND THEIR USES |
abstract | Claim 1: A method of reducing skin irritation induced by a composition containing surfactant; said method comprises contacting the skin with a detergent composition comprising at least one anionic surfactant and an effective amount of at least one nonionic amphiphilic irritation polymer prepared from a composition of free radical polymerizable monomers comprising the less a hydrophilic monomer and at least one hydrophobic monomer, wherein said hydrophilic monomer is selected from N-vinyl lactam and where said hydrophobic monomer is selected from a vinyl ester of a C₁₋₂₂ carboxylic acid or mixtures thereof. Claim 44: A method of any one of claims 25 to 43, wherein said composition comprises: a) water; b) 1 to 5% by weight of at least one non-ionic amphiphilic dispersion polymer prepared from a mixture of monomers comprising: i) 60 to 90% by weight of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (based on the total weight of monomer); ii) 10 to 35% by weight of at least one vinyl ester selected from vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl isobutyrate, vinyl valerate, vinyl hexanoate, vinyl 2-methylhexanate, 2-ethylhexanoate vinyl, vinyl iso-octanoate, vinyl nonanoate, vinyl neodecanoate, vinyl decanoate, vinyl versatate, vinyl laurate, vinyl palmitate and vinyl stearate (based on total monomer weight); iii) 0 or 0.5 to 5% by weight of a C₈₋₂₂ alkyl (meth) acrylate which is selected from octyl (meth) acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl (meth) acrylate, decyl (meth) acrylate, (meth) isodecyl acrylate, (meth) lauryl acrylate, (meth) tetradecyl acrylate, (meth) hexadecyl acrylate, (meth) stearyl acrylate and (meth) behenyl acrylate; and iv) 0 or 0.5 to 4.5% by weight of at least one associative monomer or semihydrophobic monomer (said weight percentage is considered based on the weight of the total monomers); v) 0.01 to 1% by weight in one aspect or 0.1 to 0.3% by weight of at least one crosslinker (based on the dry weight of the polymer); and c) 6 to 20% by weight of a surfactant mixture containing an anionic surfactant and an amphoteric surfactant; subject to the condition that at least one of the monomers iv) and v) must be present and when both monomers iii) and iv) are present in said monomer mixture, the combined weight of said monomers iii) and iv) cannot exceed 5% by weight of the weight of the total monomer mixture. Claim 60: The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein said detergent composition is selected from shampoos, baby shampoos, body baths, shower gels, liquid soaps, liquid dishwashing detergents, pet hygiene products, wet wipes for cleaning or facial cleansers. |
