abstract Hydrophobically associated water-soluble copolymers that are obtained in the presence of a non-polymerizable surfactant compound and which comprise hydrophobically associated monomers. The monomers comprise an ethylenically unsaturated group and a polyether block, wherein the polyether block comprises a hydrophilic polyethylene block and a hydrophobic polyalkyleneoxy block consisting of alkyleneoxy units having at least 4 carbon atoms. The monomers may optionally have a terminal polyethylene block. Also, processes to prepare the copolymers and their use.
