abstract The present technology is a method to reduce the phytotoxicity of herbicides for sugarcane plants, which comprises applying to the propagation material of sugarcane, before it is planted, an effective amount of the formula (1) and / or of the formula (2) for reducing phytotoxicity. Claim 1: A method for protecting sugarcane from the harmful effect of herbicides comprising: applying to a stem section of a sugarcane propagation material, an effective amount as an herbicide antagonist of an N-acylsulfamoylphenylurea of the formula (1) or of the formula (2), or an agronomically acceptable salt of said compounds, wherein: Ra is selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, alkyl C1-4, C1-4 haloalkyl, C1-4 haloalkoxy, C3-6 cycloalkyl, phenyl, C1-4 alkoxy, cyano, C1-4 alkylthio, C1-4 alkylsulfinyl, C1-4 alkylsulfonyl, C1-4 alkoxycarbonyl and C1 alkylcarbonyl -4; and Rb and Rc are independently selected from a group consisting of hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, C3-6 alkenyl and C3-6 alkynyl. Claim 10: A method of selectively controlling weeds at a site where there is propagation material of planted sugar cane and weeds; said method comprises: applying on the site an amount of herbicide to control weeds; and wherein the sugarcane propagation material was treated with an effective amount of N-acylsulfamoylphenylurea of the formula (1) or of the formula (2) to reduce the phototoxicity; or an agronomically acceptable salt of said compounds, wherein: Ra is selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 haloalkyl, C1-4 haloalkoxy, C3-6 cycloalkyl, phenyl, C1-4 alkoxy, cyano, C 1-4 alkylthio, C 1-4 alkylsulfinyl, C 1-4 alkylsulfonyl, C 1-4 alkoxycarbonyl and C 1-4 alkylcarbonyl; and Rb and Rc are independently selected from a group consisting of hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, C3-6 alkenyl and C3-6 alkynyl. Claim 12: The method of claim 10, wherein the herbicide is selected from sulfonylureas, haloacetanilides or aryloxyphenoxypropionic acid derivatives.
