abstract Production methods of biomass-derived pyrolysis oil with low oxygen content are provided. The initial biomass derived pyrolysis oil is deoxygenated by exposing it to a first catalyst in the presence of hydrogen containing gas at the first hydroprocessing conditions to produce a partially deoxygenated biomass derived pyrolysis oil. The first catalyst has a neutral catalyst support. The pyrolysis oil derived from partially deoxygenated biomass is exposed to a second catalyst in the presence of more hydrogen-containing gas at the second hydroprocessing conditions to produce a hydrocarbon product. The pyrolysis oil derived from biomass can be esterified before deoxygenation. A portion of the pyrolysis oil derived from biomass with low oxygen content is recycled.
