titleOfInvention INJECTABLE FORMULATION OF IODINE AND SELENIUM OIL
abstract A formulation for parenteral administration is described, which includes: iodized oil, a source of selenium, such as particles of barium selenate, and a thickening agent, such as beeswax. The components of the formulation ensure that the source of selenium remains substantially suspended within a mixture of iodized oil before and after administration. Upon administration, the formulation forms a reservoir and slowly releases iodine and selenium for a prolonged period of at least 90 days. The formulation offers the advantage of providing a single dose product for the administration of the two elements iodine and selenium to an animal, such as a sheep, and it has also been found that it is transferred to the progeny when administered to a sheep during pregnancy. Related methods and uses for administering and manufacturing the formulation are also described. Other methods for measuring iodine levels and for determining, from the results obtained, whether it is necessary to carry out iodine supplementation are also described.
