titleOfInvention TRANSGENIC CORN WITH NUTRITIONAL PROPERTIES
abstract A transgenic corn seed is provided that expresses a gene that encodes a double mutant of the E. coli glgC gene in the plastids of the endosperm. The mutant protein has a substitution of proline for aspartic acid in amino acid 295 and a substitution of glutamic acid for glycine in amino acid 296. The transgenic corn seed of the invention is characterized by higher levels of a certain number of amino acids and oil, compared with an isogenic corn seed, which does not express the transgene in a plastid of the endosperm. However, the amount of starch in the transgenic corn seed of the invention decreases or is equal to the content in the isogenic control corn seed. The application also refers to a transgenic corn seed that expresses any exogenous AGPAse to a corn endosperm plastid, said AGPase has similar kinetic properties to those of the E.coli GlgC mutant, with a replacement of proline with aspartic acid in the amino acid 295 and a substitution of glutamic acid for glycine in amino acid 296.
