abstract An improvement in the melt transesterification reaction of the diaryl carbonate with dihydroxy aryl compound is revealed. The improvement involves the following steps: (i) introducing the resulting steam stream at mid-height of a first distillation column; (ii) separating the vapor stream into a top product containing high purity monohydroxy aryloxy compound and a first bottom product; (iii) recycle (reintroduce) the high purity monohydroxy aryl compound of step (ii), in the reaction; (iv) introduce the first bottom product at half height of a second distillation column; (v) separating said first product from the bottom as a by-product of the high boiling bottom and remaining constituents above; (vi) introduce the remaining constituents from above to mid-height of a third distillation column; (vii) separating said remaining constituents from above into higher boiling low fractions and into a bottom product or sidestream of product containing the diaryl carbonate product and (vii) recycling the diaryl carbonate product directly into the reaction of transesterification.
