An oxygen barrier composition is described which is intended to limit the oxygen exposure of oxygen sensitive products and maintain and improve the quality and shelf life of such products, for example food products. The composition comprises an oxygen barrier polymer and an oxygen sequestration polymer. The composition may take the form of a physical mixture or a crosslinked mixture and may further comprise a compatibilizer, a transesterification catalyst or both. Preferably, the oxygen barrier polymer is poly (ethylene vinyl alcohol) (EVOH), polyacrylonitrile, a copolymer comprising acrylonitrile, poly (vinylidene dichloride) (PVDC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) or polyamide which other than MXD6. The invention also provides a method for preparing the above composition and a method for incorporating it into a packaging article. |
