| abstract | The present invention encompasses the use of a mixture of (a) a tasty water soluble flavor with a water soluble vehicle; and (b) an antigen selected from the group consisting of a bacterium and a virus as an active component of the vaccine administered orally for the manufacture of a vaccine formulation for oral administration for animals to provide protection against diseases associated with Antigen infection in an animal and compositions both to provide protection against diseases in an animal, and to induce the increased ingestion of a vaccine administered orally by an animal. The methods of the invention are directed to the mixing of a bacterial or viral antigen with a tasty water-soluble flavor to additional mixing of the mixture of antigen and flavor with a water-soluble vehicle for oral administration of the vaccine to an animal with the objective of providing protection against diseases associated with infection by the mixed antigen, and the induction of the increased ingestion of the vaccine with the flavoring. The present invention accordingly encompasses methods and compositions for oral vaccination of healthy animals through drinking water or syrup as an aid in disease prevention. The tasty flavoring mixture provides a vaccine formulation with a desirable flavor, with the aim of promoting self-administration of the vaccine formulation and / or preventing rejection of the formulation when administered by an animal handler. |
