A powder composition comprising an effective amount of a histamine H2 antagonist, an acidulant, and an alkaline material that will react with the acidulant in the presence of water to form carbon dioxide such that said composition is substantially free of acidulant that It contains hydroxyl groups and the acidulant is an acidulant that contains substantially non-hydroxyl groups, solid under ambient conditions. Preferably, the acidulant containing non-hydroxyl groups is selected from the group consisting of adipic acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, succinic anhydride and mixtures thereof. On the other hand, the histamine H2 antagonist is preferably selected from the group consisting of ranitidine, cimetidine, nizatidine, famotidine and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
