Asymmetric partially fluorinated compounds that are useful as lubricants or as additives for lubricant formulations, which have the molecular structure: R1f-F-R2-F-R3h, where R1f represents a total or partially fluorinated terminal group residue, F and F represent functional bridges that may be similar or different, R2 represents the main chain and R3h represents a non-fluorinated organic terminal residue group. At least one terminal group is partially or completely fluorinated and at least one other terminal group contains only atoms selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus and chlorine. A process is also provided to synthesize said compound by reacting a mixture of alcohols, mercaptans, oamines containing at least one non-fluorinated compound in the mixture, thus producing the R1f and R3h residues, with a difunctional organic compound (e.g. diacid , dinitrile, sulfonyl dihalogenide, diisocyanate, dithioisocyanate, phosphoryl dihalogenide or thiosforyl dihalogenide). A lubricant formulation is also described which includes a fluid base mixed with said partially fluorinated asymmetric compounds. |
