abstract A method for preparing low molecular weight polyethylene glycol carboxylic acids comprising reacting low molecular weight polyethylene glycols with monosubstituted aliphatic acid esters with a halogen in a base, and then saponifying the resulting intermediates. Then, polyethylene glycol carboxylic acids are extracted with an organic phase containing toluene to separate unreacted compounds and by-products. Then, the polyethylene glycol carboxylic acids extracted are acidified and purified by dialysis, gel filtration, or precipitation.
