abstract | A process for producing terephthalic acid and / or dimethyl terephthalate which includes contacting a reaction stream containing toluene with a first catalyst under conditions of disproportionation of toluene to produce a stream and intermediate product of para-xylene with negligible amounts of ortho-xylene. The first catalyst includes a crystalline molecular sieve having an ortho-xylene diffusion rate of at least 50 minutes. The first catalyst can be modified by selective selection with a silicon compound or a carbon compound. The intermediate product stream, without requiring purification of para-xylene is oxidized to give terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate. |
