abstract 1-aryl-3-heteroaryl-thioureas and substituted isothioureas as anti-atherosclerotic agents that are represented by formulas (I) or (II) where: R is a compound selected from group (III), where R9, R10, R11, R12 , R13 and R14 are each independently hydrogen or a C1-6 lower alkyl; R6 and R7 are each independently hydrogen, C1-6 lower alkyl, or CH2COOR8, where R8 is a C1-6 lower alkyl; and X is O or S; R1 is hydrogen, or a C1-6 lower alkyl; R2, R3 and R4 are each independently hydrogen or halogen; and R5 is a C1-6 lower alkyl; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, its use for the manufacture of a medicament useful for raising the concentration of HDL cholesterol that may be useful in the treatment of atherosclerosis and related conditions, such as dyslipoproteinemias and coronary heart disease and pharmaceutical composition containing them.
