abstract | An improved process for the preparation of formylphosphonic acid derivatives is revealed. An aminomethylphosphonic acid substrate is contacted with a reagent selected from the group consisting of water, an alcohol, a phenolic compound, and mixtures thereof and an oxidation gas in the presence of a catalyst to form a mixture of reaction products containing a derivative of formylphosphonic acid and the conditions under which such contact is made are controlled so that no more than 50% of the derivative of formylphosphonic acid formed in the reaction product mixture is consumed by reaction with the reagent. |
