abstract A one-step procedure is provided for preparing 2-aryl-5-perfluoroalkylpyrrole derivatives, directly from the perfluoroacetylated Strecker reaction product. Such pyrrole derivatives are insecticides, and also useful as precursors for other arylpyrrolinesecticidal compounds. In addition, nitrile amide intermediates, useful in the preparation of insecticidal arylpyrrole compounds, are provided A process for the manufacture of a compound of formula (I), wherein R is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl optionally substituted with a C1 alkoxy group -C4o phenyl; n is an integer of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8; W is CN, NO2, COOR1, or COR2; A is (IV); L is hydrogen or halogen; M and Q are each independently hydrogen, halogen, CN, NO2, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 haloalkoxy, C1-C4 alkylthio, C1-C4 alkylsulfinyl, or when M and Q are in adjacent positions can be taken together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached to form a ring in which MQ represents the structure: -OCH2O-, -OCF2O-, or -CH = CH-CH = CH; R1 and R2 are each independently C1-C4 alkyl; R3, R4 and R5 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, NO2, CHO or R4 and R5 can be taken together with the atoms to which they are attached to form a ring, in which R4R5 is represented by structure (V); R6, R7, R8 and R9 are each independently hydrogen, halogen, CN or NO2; and X is O or S; and J is a hydrogen or halogen atom; comprising reacting a nitrile amide of formula (II), where A, R, and n are as described hereinbefore for formula (I), with at least one molar equivalent e of a dienophile of formula (III) , where W is as described herein
